Lorraine Courtney: 'Renty-somethings' suffer as landlords hold all the cards
I have never owned property. In fact, I am renting for the foreseeable future and the most expensive item I own is a Gordon Ramsay food processor. Property porn is a consuming passion: flicking through interior magazines in Easons and sighing over Bauhaus armchairs.
I'm not alone. Renting has become the new home-owning, although not out of choice. Most of us who would prefer to own a property, or at least to rent in aloneness and peace, are having to move in with friends or strangers.
With hefty deposits required for your first property, we are totally priced out of the market. Instead of buying, we have to try to make homes in rented rooms, eternally listening to other people's tastes in music.
