Lorraine Courtney: Long road of improvement ahead before I will learn to love the bus
You're reading this (indulge me a little bit here) on your morning bus commute to work, swaying about, trying not to spill your takeout coffee on the other drones wedged around you. There's a nasty smell of cheap aftershave, morning breath, sweat and a soundtrack of the mobile phone ringtone and the tinny tfft-tfft-tfft emanating from headphones. You're frustrated but it's an inevitable part of your day.
Last week Minister of State Alan Kelly said he thought there was a snobbish attitude among the middle classes towards travelling by public bus. "Some people believe public transport is something that other social classes use and do not see it as the 'middle class' thing to do. This is especially true for bus transport" he told the 'Irish Times'.
It's an outrageous notion that taking public transport is purely a "class" issue.
