HORSEPLAY is a bunch of lads messing about with a football in the front room until something is broken, or it's a few youngsters getting rowdy on a dance-floor.

But Dail Eireann isn't a nightclub. Nor does horseplay describe what occurred between Tom Barry and Aine Collins in the early hours of yesterday morning.

While the casual disrespect shown by the Fine Gael TD to his colleague was breathtaking, it didn't produce a shock of the new but a wearisome sense of deja-vu. For our parliament is a boys' club, a venue where sexism storms have raged before. Nor does anyone have to reach back into distant, less enlightened times to find examples of female members being disrespected.
