Lise Hand: Sombre backdrop leaves little appetite for mud-slinging in Meath East

If there's one emotion which all eleven candidates running in the Meath East by-election share, it's a feeling of gratitude that this has been a relatively short three-week campaign, given the horrendous weather which has battered the teams of canvassers trudging through icy rain and high winds from Kells to Dunboyne.

Today is the final day on the doors for most of the candidates - some, like Fianna Fáil's Thomas Byrne, have already finished on the campaign trail.

It's been a low-key sort of campaign, probably due to several factors.
