Lise Hand: Simon shows no sign of stopping as he steps into the breach

Simon should be a basket-case of sheer exhaustion. By any rights, the man should look like a neatly-dressed zombie from 'Night of the Living Dead', sunken-eyed and hollow-cheeked, slumped glassy-eyed in his seat in the Dail chamber.

The Agriculture Minister has been so hectic of late that he's in serious danger of meeting himself on the way back from Brussels one of these days, what with all-night sessions in EU HQ.

He's been haggling deals on fish quotas, holding emergency sessions on the unfortunate ubiquity of horse meat in beef products, not to mention spending two days this week in the Brussels bunker hammering out a deal on CAP reform under the gimlet gaze of every member of the Irish farming community.
