THE level of chatter in the Burlington Hotel's ballroom was so loud that not even an amplified Big Phil Hogan could be heard over the din until some stern shushing orders came from the stage.

But then the 800-plus guests at Fine Gael's fundraising President's Dinner on Saturday night had a heck of a lot to chew over alongside the main-course choices of beef or salmon.

For all sorts of merry hell has taken place in the party over the past few months, what with the Heave That Dare Not Speak Its Name last June, the roller-coaster opinion-polls, the recent fracas with Fianna Fail and Labour over the withdrawal of Dail pairings, and now the current imbroglio over whether the hasty cobbling-together of a national government to save our skins is a noble idea or an utterly daft one.
