After all the Lanigan's Ball style stepping in and out again from the German Chancellor on the thorny subject of bank debt, our own bewildered leader was in sore need of a bit of French amour when he arrived in Paris.

He had lined up a meeting with President Francois Hollande some time ago, and it was a perfectly-timed opportunity to settle national nerves and quiet opposition gunfire by unveiling Francois as a powerful pal.

It was vital that the Taoiseach could secure a sign from the French president that the Government's jubilation over the prospect of some leeway on our bank debts after the "seismic" June EU summit hadn't been a case of over-egging the souffle and leaving Enda with serious oeuf over his visage.
