If the squads of hyper-vigilant security which will be patrolling the Lough Erne resort the night before the G8 summit begins should spot an immaculately dressed man carefully digging a hole outside the hotel entrance and placing inside it a statue of a child, they need not be alarmed.

For it will simply be the hotel's general manager, Ferghal Purcell, invoking the meteorological superpowers of the Infant of Prague in the hope that continuous sunlight will shine upon the Co Fermanagh venue on June 17 and 18.

For the weather is just about the only element of the global gathering which Ferghal cannot place on his to-do list.
