Lise Hand: Enda is strides ahead in charm stakes after Mitt hits gaffe hurdles

Sports-mad Enda began the day hanging out with Ireland's Olympic athletes at their training-ground in Twickenham, ended it at the spectacular opening ceremony of the Games -- oh, and in between he hob-nobbed with kings, queens, presidents and prime ministers at a pre-Olympics soiree in Buckingham Palace.

And he also shoe-horned in a pow-wow with a politician who makes him look as sure-footed and debonair as a mountain-goat in Ray-Bans -- the man the miffed British press have dubbed Mitt The Twit Romney.

The US Republican presidential candidate had requested a meeting with the Taoiseach while they were both in town -- Mitt's on a bit of a profile-boosting tour of countries such as Britain, Poland and Israel, and so a grip-and-grin photo-op with the Irish prime minister couldn't do any harm with the 45 million Irish-Americans back home.
