Lise Hand: Big top caving in as ringmaster finally falls from high-wire
WHAT was Brian Cowen feeling as he walked into the Wellesley Room in the Merrion Hotel at 2pm on Saturday to announce his relinquishment of the leadership of his beloved party?
Oh he appeared to be calm and poised enough, but that was surely one last big brave front for the cameras.
What did he feel? Anger at how his reign as leader of Fianna Fail was ending in farce and confusion? Shock at the party's self-destruction? Bewilderment over how it had all unravelled so suddenly and horribly? Disgust that he had been left with no option but to quit before he could lead his troops into the forthcoming bloody fray, as he had repeatedly insisted he would do? Sadness that people never understood what he was all about? Or overwhelming relief that the nightmare was finally lurching to a close?
