IT would have been well-nigh impossible for any Irish citizen to peruse a newspaper, tune into the radio or watch the news on telly in recent weeks without happening upon the name of Alan Shatter.

For the Justice Minister – who's rarely far from the news at any time – has become a veritable lightning-rod for headlines these days.

They've been sparked by the brouhaha over Mick Wallace and the gardai; by his own brief encounter with the fuzz at a checkpoint; and even prompted by mirthful critiques of his saucy novel, 'Laura' which came back to life after two decades of languishing in bargain bins.
