Life marked by kindness, wisdom and generosity
LEWIS L Glucksman, trustee of New York University, a major philanthropist in New York and Ireland and former Chair of Shearson Lehman Brothers Inc died July 5 at his Irish home in Cork after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife, Loretta Brennan Glucksman, daughters Mary Salinger Glucksman and Jane Salinger Glucksman and stepchildren, John Cooney, Christopher Cooney and Kate Cooney Picco.
Mr Glucksman and his wife, who is a prominent Irish-American leader, co-founded Glucksman Ireland House at New York University in 1993. It has been said of them that they brought American-style charity to Ireland and Irish culture to America. Glucksman Ireland House is now one of the leading centres of Irish studies in America, focusing on Irish history, literature and culture. Seamus Heaney, the Irish poet and Nobel Laureate wrote: "Support for NYU's Irish Studies Program will be support for that which Irish studies stands for - a re-imagining of our past in order to better prefigure our future."
