BRIAN Kearney seemed to have it all: a beautiful and glamorous younger wife, a young son who was the apple of their eye, a €1m house in suburban south Dublin and a boutique hotel on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

Business, too, seemed to be prospering. He ran the family electrical contracting business called Associated Electrics Limited which had a gross profit of €2.1m in 2005 and although that fell to €1.8m in 2006, there was retained profit of €2.27m in the company.

The couple had an on/off relationship. They had become engaged in 1995 but had parted soon after. But then they got together again and married in 2002 and their son was born six months later.
