'No," says Bill Cullen, when I ask him if he has a couple of million stashed away from his years as owner of the highly profitable Renault franchise. "I kept putting money back into the company."

It's nearly 30 years since we last sat down together in The Park restaurant in Main Street, Blackrock, the day he bought the Renault franchise in Ireland for £1 – plus £22m in debt.

Now, a lifetime later, the one-time paperboy from Dublin's North Strand has watched it all turn to dust. Ulster Bank put receivers into his Glencullen Holdings and is in the process of selling off the last remnants of the motor empire he built over 26 years.
