Laura Noonan: Super Mario's all smiles as he puts own stamp on proceedings

HE'D been crowned 'Super Mario' for a crowd-pleasing interest rate cut a little earlier, but the new ECB chief Mario Draghi could easily have been mistaken for a super star yesterday, such was the scrum of photographers and camera crews surrounding him at his first press conference.

He stood beaming for a good three or four minutes for pictures which effectively marked the changing of the guard at one of Europe's most powerful institutions.

Since 2003, Jean-Claude Trichet had presided over the ECB's monthly press briefings in his own distinctively French style; animated and charming for the most part, yet cutting and sharp on occasion when things weren't going his way.
