Kelly shows poor timing

Not for the first time, a senior politician has explored public transport and arrived at the wrong conclusion: the problem with the service, he argues, is the public, not the transport.

Alan Kelly, junior minister with responsibility for commuting, pictured, has identified middle-class snobbery as the greatest impediment to the development in this country of a continental-style public transport network.

"Some people believe public transport is something that other social classes use and do not see it as the 'middle class' thing to do," he insisted last week.
