Julia Molony: How did we let 23 trafficked children fall through cracks?

Once again in this State we are colluding in our silence on an issue that is a national tragedy.

Who are the 23 children who have been trafficked into and within Ireland in the last year? What are the names, the stories, the lives behind this disturbing statistic?

Where do they come from, where have they gone and why have we not heard more about their plight, their disappearance? We expect missing children to prompt a media storm, for every detail about these sorts of cases to be klaxoned from the media, so how is it possible that in our own country 23 children could have fallen through the cracks?

According to the annual Trafficking in Persons report, released by the US state department, almost half of the 48 victims of trafficking identified in Ireland were children – 19 of those were abused in the commercial sex trade.
