John Mulligan: Make-or-break days for retailers but tide seems to be turning
THIS weekend, there will be retailers across the country praying for a Christmas miracle. They might just get it.
As shoppers flock to high streets and malls all over Ireland today to snap up last-minute gifts, most of them will be oblivious to the fact that they're helping to turn the tide for a business sector that's suffered horrendously since the downturn began.
In fact, today will be the busiest day for retail sales here – not just for this year, but in any time over the past five years, according to David Fitzsimons, the head of industry group Retail Excellence Ireland.
