John McGuinness: I've instigated probe into the HSE's shameful stonewalling

OVER the course of recent months, there has been much public debate in this country about what many fear is an impending and dangerous funding crisis in the health service.

One of the many important strands of information arising from the resignation of former Minister Roisin Shortall was her revelation about the failure to manage the health budget and her confirmation that former HSE chief executive Cathal Magee found himself writing to the Health Minister on a weekly basis to warn him of budget problems before he was forced to resign.

All of this is taking place against a backdrop of unprecedented strain on the public finances and daily leaks about what we should be afraid of in the Budget, what is going to happen to our child benefit and how much we should expect to pay in new property taxes; and all of this added to the collapse of consumer confidence.
