John Drennan: Political winners and losers in a year of indifference
It was in a real sense the year of indifference. Some might argue that the word shambolic comes to mind but we are perhaps not quite there yet.
Instead 2012 was the year when the Grumpy Old Men performed indifferently, the electorate became more indifferent to them, they became more indifferent about each other and, worst of all, the elite became far more indifferent to the citizens' needs.
One signal of the speed with which this administration has discarded all the fancy lingerie it donned prior to election 2011 was the gentle death of its banking inquiry and there were plenty more as the close of the year found us still draped across La Belle Dame of Austerity.
