The brouhaha in the Public Accounts Committee that followed Enda Kenny's imitation of a second-rate Caesar must almost have come as a welcome distraction for a Taoiseach, who, despite his reputation for agonising caution, has, in recent weeks, marched his government into a series of political quagmires.

In the aftermath of Enda's demand that the Fine Gael Salomes on the PAC bring him the head of John McGuinness, the kindest analysis of the Taoiseach's actions was that the presidency of Europe must have "gone to his head".

But the events detailed in the PAC have a somewhat more sinister hue than a mere display of ego.
