John Downing: From sunny California to Arctic cold of Meath East

THE Arctic winds which threatened to drive glacial showers down on Dunshaughlin were surely enough to banish any lingering stars from the Taoiseach's eyes.

After a week of being feted and flattered by US President Barack Obama, the movie mogul Steven Spielberg, and other American luminaries, Mr Kenny landed at Dublin Airport on Saturday and straight away went to register his much-needed presence on the Meath East by-election canvass trail. The contest, now in its final days, will be a huge focus for Mr Kenny this week.

Meath East votes on Wednesday, and by Thursday afternoon it will be clear whether Mr Kenny and Fine Gael, or Fianna Fail and Micheal Martin, get the considerable morale boost and political momentum which comes from a win.
