WITH the passing of Moira Deady, who is destined to be forever remembered as Mary Riordan of Leestown, all the older characters who brought rural Ireland to imperishable life in RTE's long-running soap opera are now gone.

John Cowley, who played Mary's husband Tom in 'The Riordans', died 12 years ago.

His wife Annie D'Alton, who portrayed the interfering Minnie Brennan, predeceased him by 15 years, while Frank O'Donovan, who took the role of Minnie's long-suffering husband Batty, died nine years before that.
