Joe Barry: Small farmers are lifeblood of rural community – we must protect them

Most of us farmers are still unclear as to what, if anything, was agreed in Brussels regarding the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Minister Simon Coveney's optimistic statement that "Europe is a very diverse place and we have managed to now get a common agreement" must be greeted with scepticism. We still have no specific details as to who gets what.

Some issues have been resolved such as the option of choosing 2012, 2013 or 2014 as the year when the amount of land each individual owns or rents is established.
