Jody Corcoran: Tubridy flounders as 'Late Late' sinks
Byrne and Kenny gave young pretender Ryan a lesson in how they made the chatshow great, writes Jody Corcoran
For a moment it felt like the Late Late Show of old, the one we remember, that had become so essential. The host, Ryan Tubridy, a boy among men -- the men are Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny -- had left the comfort of his seat to move towards the audience.
To his left was Nell McCafferty, to his right Mary Kenny and Fr Brian D'Arcy; all around him were several of the people who had helped shape the country through the years, and many others who had not.
McCafferty was about to give the boy a lesson in the art of conversation, a gentle lesson, what you might call a maternal lesson, incongruous as that may seem for a woman who can ooze acid with a smile.
