AMOST fascinating outcome to the abortion debate is the existence now of five former Fine Gael TDs among the ranks of the opposition, six when the exiled but no less significant Denis Naughten is taken into account.

These TDs will be somewhat anxious to shed the impression, already attached by a liberal media, that they only represent the dying days of a Catholic, conservative, pro-life position – which to a large extent they do.

But not too anxious, for there is still a market in that particular gap. Only a fool would suggest otherwise.
