EARLY last November, two Irish women got themselves into a bit of a bind while doing charity work in Haiti.

A local girl -- herself in her early teens -- approached them in their compound with her youngest baby. The child was in an almost frenzied state of hunger, screaming uncontrollably in the blazing 40C sun.

Against their better judgment, and against any earlier advice of the charity, they sourced food and then allowed the baby to sleep in one of the houses which the two women were helping to build.
