James Fitzsimons: Paying the foreign banks means our nurses go short
Ireland can either keep the EU happy or pay its public servants what they want
Brendan Howlin is the toast of the town. The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform may have brokered a deal that is being described as a miracle – by public servants.
He has done what nobody else could. He has secured a job for life for 300,000 public servants – whether we need them or not – and the pensions they didn't pay for are safe.
It will only take three years to cut €1,000,000,000 off public sector pay and pensions. Of course that's before tax which we would have kept anyway. The real saving is closer to €800,000,000, if even that – but they are hailing it as an unprecedented victory. Have I missed something?
