Elizabeth Shannon, wife of an American ambassador to Ireland decades ago, is still remembered here for something she said about the Irish. She found that we had no "sense of outrage".

After all those years, after all the scandal, misgovernment and injustice that have swollen since Mrs Shannon made that remark, have we proved her wrong?

The Central Remedial Clinic affair has provoked outrage on a scale unknown in her time or since. It has touched a nerve.
