James Downey: Handshake is but a step forward -- now Sinn Fein must earn trust
AFTER the Good Friday Agreement, a tart joke about the Northern settlement made the rounds in Belfast and farther afield: "One lot are too stupid to realise they've won and the other lot are too clever to admit they've lost."
Not always true. Sinn Fein's leaders were not very clever last year when they boycotted Queen Elizabeth's visit to the Republic and denounced it as "insensitive, premature and offensive". They have not made a mistake like that a second time.
And when they rectified their error this week, they made sure to squeeze out of it every last drop of favourable publicity.
