It's time for a real debate about our justice system

YOU know its time to overhaul the judicial appointments process when even the judges admit it's too political. Last night's call by the Chief Justice for a radical overhaul of the process is a welcome intervention in a debate that has been raging way past its bedtime.

Ireland stands out as one of the few countries in Europe that allows its politicians to hand-pick judges, despite the illusion of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board which is supposed to depoliticise appointments.

The removal of politics from judicial appointments was a critical component of the Good Friday Agreement, a measure seen as vital to enhancing public confidence in the justice system in Northern Ireland.
