SPORT as an engine for economic recovery and growth? Well, many commentators credited the Italia '90 odyssey with sparking Ireland into life two decades ago but I'm afraid it's going to take more than 'mood music' to help us out of this one.

Let's perform some rough analysis on the various 'sectors' within what can be loosely termed as the 'sports industry'.

If we start at the top and look at the physical infrastructure picture I think we have to accept that, when the Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road opens later this year, we will be pretty much saturated for seats.
