He was almost out of the woods until he started airing conspiracy theory

THINGS were ticking along nicely for John McGuinness at yesterday's Public Accounts Committee meeting until he again – for the umpteenth time – claimed "powerful forces" were out to do him down.

Mr McGuinness, who vacated the PAC chair while TDs quizzed him, had dealt with most queries by that stage.

He had defended his claims that the State should pay for ministerial spouses to travel abroad in some circumstances, including the 2008 ministerial trip he, his wife and an official took to Seattle for St Patrick's Day at a €22,000 cost to the taxpayer.
