Hail Fab Fran, Roman rock god

Barry Egan witnessed at first hand how the pontiff worked a crowd like a true showman

Last week, Pope Francis, the former archbishop of Buenos Aires, spied his old mucker Fr Fabian Baez in St Peter's Square during a papal audience and invited him into the Popemobile for a spin.

Fab Frannie seems to have the whole world in a spin.

I was about 15 feet away from him for four hours a few weeks ago in St Peter's Square. There were 10,000 people out front, pilgrims funnelled in from all over the world. His Holiness gave a big shout out to all of them from the bandstand, so to speak. It was more showbiz than most things I have witnessed in my life.
