Graham Clifford: Why we must surrender parts of our coastline

After the debris has been cleaned up, the costs assessed and the damage paid for, a much bigger question has to be asked and answered: what do we do now?

One expert has a radical and controversial solution. Professor Robert Devoy, a leading coastal and marine specialist at UCC, believes some parts of the Irish seaboard may need to be lost to the sea as rising water levels and increased erosion threaten vulnerable areas.

"Of course it wouldn't be easy for coastal communities to accept, but the reality is we're approaching a time when we might consider letting some coastal land go and retreat further inland," he said.
