Gerry's passion for life was his gift to the nation
Gerry Ryan's considerable professional skill, coupled with his great sense of occasion, made him an absolute joy to work with, writes David Blake-Knox
Gerry was such a vital presence in so many people's lives that it seems almost impossible to believe that he is really gone.
He was a major broadcasting talent, and his influence can be heard every day on every radio station in the country. He had a natural affinity and a profound understanding of the medium, both in technical and creative terms. He could modulate his voice or re-position his microphone to create an immediate mood.
He could also use pauses to great dramatic effect. Radio broadcasters are often terrified of "dead air", but Gerry could make it become pregnant with meaning. Above all, he was willing to take risks, and was fearless when confronting the issues of the day. His listeners knew that he was always prepared to ask the awkward, but essential, question on their behalf.
