'All political lives, unless they are cut off in midstream at a happy juncture, end in failure, because that is the nature of politics and of human affairs.''

Overused it may be, but this oft quoted observation by the one time cantankerous beacon of right wing British politics, Enoch Powell, continues to resonate through the years. And its folksy wisdom can still be applied to many sundry situations, both political and otherwise.

For it seems the gods will so often conspire – without fairness or justice – to herald an end for those who have enjoyed times of high achievement.
