Fudged Fianna Fail links doused the dragon's fire

Sean Gallagher was just about 56 hours from the Aras when his campaign -- which came out of nowhere and was heading somewhere fast -- hit the crash barriers.

It's not so much that Michael D won the election as that Sean Gallagher lost it, when his sat-nav failed to alert him to an upcoming hazard. He could have detoured round it or put his foot on the accelerator and zoomed over it, but he spluttered to a halt.

And at that point the removal men, who must have been on notice to start shifting boxes down the M1 from Blackrock in Co Louth to the Phoenix Park, stood down.
