Free repairs crucial for a public sick of demands on their wallets
PAYING to fix leaking water pipes on private property is one way to get homeowners on board with the new water charges.
Not only will no one be able to claim they cannot afford to have a leak repaired, it also signals that the Government wants to introduce an element of fairness to the new system.
The dogs in the street know that many homes were badly constructed during the boom, with pipes not laid sufficiently deep to prevent them rupturing during two big freezes. But many homeowners will not be aware that thousands of litres of water are seeping into the ground beneath their feet every day, wastage that will hit them in the pocket when charges are introduced.
