Frederick Forsyth: Rise up, reclaim your country
I AM intrigued by the thoughts of Mike Soden -- both by his eminence as a member of the new Central Banking Commission (a government appointment) and his preparedness to be the first within the Irish Establishment to break with so many years of slavish obedience to Brussels.
There is not, nor has there ever been, a necessity for such obsequiousness.
Mr Soden, in suggesting that Ireland should at last look westward to her most natural friend across the Atlantic, goes so far as to invoke the nostrum of Ireland as the 51st state of the US. Surely this is a leap too far -- and it is also unnecessary. Why not consider the mid-Atlantic option?
