Frances Murphy: Children are the key to a fit and healthy future

THIS week has been marked by the publication of two important documents that can make a significant impact on the lives of our children. Yesterday, the National Framework for Improved Health and Wellbeing was launched by Health Minister James Reilly. This followed the launch of a Eurydice Report on Physical Education and Sport in Schools in Europe.

What might we prioritise to ensure that the goals for improved health and wellbeing can be achieved for our children, while at the same time addressing the Eurydice finding that just 4pc of teaching time in Irish primary schools is devoted to physical education?

As physical education is inextricably linked to goals for improved health and wellbeing, I believe that a focus on physical education for children in our infant classes in primary schools is overdue.
