Following best practice is vital, even with new law

It took a UK obstetrician to highlight the lottery faced by pregnant Irish women who may be in need of a termination because their life is at risk.

Prof Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, who chaired the inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar, said the interpretation of the law on termination was a factor in her death.

Savita happened to be admitted to a hospital where doctors took a cautious view about ending a pregnancy, putting too much emphasis on waiting for the foetal heartbeat to stop.
