Fionnan Sheahan: How Labour got it wrong ...

The childish behaviour of the Labour Party candidate Eoin Holmes in throwing a sulk at the count centre in Ashbourne last night provided a vivid image of the party's calamity.

Mr Holmes was full of bravado during the Meath East by-election, but all his pomp deserted him when his pathetic vote came through.

Labour managed to lose its deposit by getting less than 5pc of the vote, trailing in fifth place behind a first-time Sinn Fein candidate and a little-known new party runner.
