Fiona O'Shea: Resistance will be futile as Revenue get the claws out

New powers will allow the Commissioners to collect the property tax straight from banks

Fiona O'Shea

Watching chairman of the Revenue Commissioners Josephine Feehily on the news last week gave me the sinking feeling that I and over a million other Irish citizens are being herded like cattle into a pen.

Don't get me wrong. Having paid tax through the PAYE system for most of my working life, I'm used to tax being taken out of my pay before I see a cent of it. But this property tax is different.

At least PAYE is an income tax coming out of my income. I've nothing coming in from my property to cover the property tax. Which makes the range of powers being targeted at us by the Revenue Commissioners all the more alarming. Anyone who doesn't pay the tax can expect to have it taken out of their wages, lifted from their social welfare benefit or demanded from their bank.
