WE'RE all middle class now, British politician John Prescott once declared, and that's the main reason Irish food and drink exports have enjoyed a record year.

From China to Russia and not forgetting the most important market of all, the UK, the world's middle classes have a growing appetite for the type of products Ireland has in abundance.

Where once Ireland was renowned for producing huge hunks of cheddar and beef by the barrel, the country's food producers have gone upmarket to meet the more sophisticated palates of the world's growing bourgeoisie.
