Everyone must fight to keep the family or society will pay price

Bishop Christopher Jones

MARRIAGE is essential to the common good. This view is also supported by extensive research on the topic of stability in families.

But it is a sad reality that some marriages break down for unavoidable reasons. Compassion ought to be our overriding response to the difficulties facing couples. In such circumstances single parents often make heroic efforts to prepare their children in love of life.

However, a society that does not strongly promote and uphold marriage -- giving it special recognition and support -- will inevitably experience growing marital breakdown and, in some cases, the near disappearance of a culture of marriage altogether, as we see in parts of Britain and indeed in some parts of this country also.
