NEWS that Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Gilmore is to sell off the best wines from his department's famous cellar in Iveagh House will satisfy those who want to continue cutting into what they perceive as the state-funded decadence or the 'fat cat' lifestyle of old.

But for many of us, it is more of a silly PR move by Gilmore and another example of the tokenism being used to appease an angry public.

The reality is that a wine cellar is an important part of any foreign service. Diplomats entertain for the State. That is what they do. Not for nothing did they come up with the quip, 'they dined for Ireland'.
