HIQA – the Health Information and Quality Authority – has announced that it will be carrying out an assessment of the "benefit of scheduled surgery" for thousands of patients throughout Ireland. We are informed that this review will result in some operations being limited to patients for whom there is a clear "clinical benefit".
The list of targeted procedures includes hip replacements, removal of tonsils and treatment of cataracts.
