It's almost 111 years since the Wright Brothers took their chances with that flimsy little plane at Kitty Hawk, but the company we are analysing today, the Boeing Corporation, has been part of the aviation business for 104 of those years.

It also produces rockets, satellites, missiles, inter-planetary travel systems and most likely a lot of other stuff that would be regarded as far too secret to be entrusted to the gentle readers of the Irish Independent.

Boeing has the distinction of being America's top exporter; it has an astonishing 170,000 employees in 70 countries worldwide. But despite its footprint all over the space, defence and security sectors, it is its passenger aircraft that make it the household name it is.
