Dion Fanning: Why we are all Irish football supporters now

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in June 1988, a bedraggled, long-suffering, marginalised but ever hopeful people abandoned their normal activities for an afternoon of exquisite agony: we called them Irish football supporters.

On a sunny afternoon in June, Ray Houghton put the ball in the English net and Irish football, maybe even Ireland, was never the same again.

This evening in Poznan, Giovanni Trapattoni will lead Ireland into a European Championships, the country's first appearance in the tournament since 1988.
